| The mythological term “hermaphrodite” implies that a person is both fully male and fully female. The term hermaphrodite derives from Hermaphroditus, the Greek mythological child of Hermes and Aphrodite.
According to newspaper reports, tests show that sex row runner Caster Semenya is a hermaphrodite . The unreleased report shows the South African has no womb or ovaries and has internal testes – the male sex organs that produce testosterone.

1. The term hermaphrodite derives from Hermaphroditus, the Greek mythological child of Hermes and Aphrodite. Born a handsome boy, he was transformed into an androgynous being by union with the nymph Salmacis.
2. In Star Wars, fictional alien race The Hutts are a hermaphrodite species. The most famous of the Hutts, is of course, Jabba who captures and enslaves Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi.

5. In South Park Season 2 mad scientist Dr Mephisto suggests that Cartman’s mum is a hermaphrodite.
6. Earlier this year pop star Lady Gaga denied claims that she is a hermaphrodite , calling the rumours ‘ridiculous’. “I'm not offended,” she said, “my vagina is offended.”
7. Animals such a snails, and certain species of segmented worms, molluscs, crustaceans, and fish are hermaphroditic with each individual capable of producing both eggs and sperm.
8. Star Trek: New Frontier features the hermaphrodite species, The Hermats. Lieutenant Commander Burgoyne 172 is a member of the Hermat species and possess both male and female characteristics.
9. 2007 Argentine film XXY, tells the story of a 15-year-old intersex person as she comes to terms with her sexuality. View the trailer below.
10. Hermaphrodites feature in ancient and modern art. Two famous sculptures, The Sleeping Hermaphrodite and The Reclining Hermaphrodite can be found in the Louvre in Paris and the National Museum of Rome, respectively.
